Influenza Immunization

Indications/Recommendations

  • The CDC recommends that anyone who is over the age of six months should receive the influenza vaccine.
  • Patients should be vaccinated yearly for influenza
  • Patients at a high risk of developing complications due to the influenza virus should especially be targeted for the influenza vaccine. this includes:
    • Patients with chronic disease states such as asthma, COPD, and diabetes
    • Pregnant women
    • Patients over the age of 65
  • Individuals who are care-takers for someone with a high risk of developing complications should be vaccinated. This includes:
    • Care-givers to patients with chronic disease states
    • Care-givers to those over the age of 65
    • Care-givers to young children
  • Avoid the influenza vaccine in the following:
    • Patients with severe allergy to chicken eggs
    • Patients who have had a severe allergic reaction to the Influenza vaccine in the past
    • Patients who are currently experiencing a moderate to severe illness with a fever (wait until fully recovered to receive the influenza vaccine)
    • Patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome
